Ball valves are safety-critical components. A valve that fails on a Class 300 hydrocarbon line, or a stainless steel body that corrodes in a chlorinated medium, is rarely a design problem — it is almost always a manufacturing and material control problem: an unverified casting, a skipped heat treatment, or a seat material substituted without documentation.

Only a manufacturer with in-house casting, machining, and testing can control these variables end to end. A trading company, however professional, depends entirely on whichever factory currently has spare capacity. When demand spikes, quality follows price.

That is not a criticism of traders — for small repeat orders of standard catalog items, they can be efficient. But for project supply, OEM customization, or batch orders with ITP requirements, you need to know exactly where and how your valves are made.

1. Check the business license scope

A real manufacturer's business license (request the English translation) includes manufacturing of valves or valve components in its registered scope. A license limited to "import & export of..." without manufacturing rights tells you the entity cannot legally produce what it sells.

2. Require a live factory video walk-through

Not a promotional video — a real-time walkthrough on a video call. Ask the operator to show the date on a production board, a work order in progress, and the specific machine you discussed. Five minutes of live footage defeats an hour of polished marketing.

3. Verify the casting process in-house

For stainless steel valves, ask one direct question: "Do you cast in your own foundry, or do you buy castings?" A vertically integrated producer runs silica sol investment casting (for precision grades like CF8 and CF8M) and/or sand casting in-house. 4. Confirm machining capability

A spectrometer for PMI (Positive Material Identification) on incoming bars and billets, heat-number transfer records from casting through machining, and material certificates (EN 10204 3.1) per batch. If the answer is "yes, we can provide if the customer asks," treat it as no.

6. Match certifications to the producing entity

Certificates must be issued to the factory's legal name, not a related sales company. ISO 9001 covers the quality management system; product-level credentials — CE/PED for EU pressure equipment, ATEX for explosive atmospheres, API 607 for fire-tested valve performance, TA-Luft for fugitive emissions, SIL for functional safety — apply to specific product ranges. Ask for certificate numbers and validity; all of these are independently verifiable with the issuing bodies.

7. Agree third-party inspection rights up front

A manufacturer with nothing to hide will accept SGS, BV, TÜV, or your nominated inspector at the pre-shipment stage, witnessing hydrostatic and pneumatic tests per ISO 5208 or API 598. Write this into the purchase order, including the right to reject batches on failed witness tests.

8. Check export history and market references

Ask for the customs declaration patterns, main export markets, and — ideally — one reference customer in your industry. A manufacturer with 15+ years of export history to regulated markets (North America, EU, Middle East EPC projects) has already survived audits like the one you are about to run.
