CF8M is the cast name for 316-type chemistry.A datasheet stating "CF8M body" and one stating "316 body" describe the same alloy family — one is cast, one is wrought. Castings per ASTM A351; wrought per ASTM A182/A276.
The "L" and low-carbon variants matter only where welding occurs— for threaded and flanged assemblies, standard grades are fully adequate.
The chloride threshold is the dividing line.304 fails in seawater and many brackish applications; 316/CF8M handles moderate chlorides; seawater duty belongs to duplex.
A useful shorthand is the Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PREN): 304 ≈ 18, 316 ≈ 24, super duplex ≈ 40. If your service's chloride content pushes the required PREN above what the grade delivers, no amount of good manufacturing will save the valve.
